In Case You're Interested
You know that feeling when you need to make a decision - but instead, you find yourself doom-scrolling, over-researching, or stuck in an endless loop of “I’ll figure it out later”?
That’s not just regular degular procrastination.
Your nervous system is firmly in the chat.
I’ve been thinking a lot this week about how our nervous systems shape the way we make decisions - especially career decisions.
One, because I’m brainstorming a program on this (would this be helpful for you? Hit reply and let me know!), and two - because it’s been showing up in so many of my client sessions at the moment.
So this week’s roundup links are all connected to this idea in some way.
Three Pep Talk Podcasts 🎧
Ten Year’d - a podcast that dives deep with people who have 10+ years of experience in a career or lifestyle across a range of industries like retail, fashion and entrepreneurship. A good place to start is with the Hackney Hustle to High Finance episode
Thriving in the Game - this podcast is all about navigating the corporate experience in way that helps you thrive. I was interviewed in Episode 3 about how your values shape your working life, whether you realise it or not!
The Slow Down - if you’ve been feeling like you’re battling to reclaim your time back from work, this episode will reassure you that you’re not alone.
Three Recent Reading Recco’s 📚
A common pattern I’ve been seeing in many of my clients recently, is the desire to stop hiding and start sharing more of their expertise and thought leadership in public. And feeling confronted by the fear that immediately arises. We’ve been doing some nervous system regulation practises to help move through some of this fear, and I’ve also recommended these three books to various clients.
A Third Perspective (Brave Expression in the Age of Intolerance) - Africa Brooke
Break the Cycle (A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma) - Dr Mariel Buque
Show Your Work (10 Ways to Share Your Work and Get Discovered) - Austin Kleon
Three Energy Boosting Playlists 🎶
When we think of stress we often immediately think of the very frantic and frazzled type of stress - the fight or flight response.
So we think about needing to calm down, slow down and rest.
But if you’re feeling slow, lethargic and procrastinating a lot on taking action even on small tasks, you might be in a freeze stress response.
One of my clients recently described it like this: "All I want to do is sleep a lot but I never feel rested. I could sleep for hours, but it’s like my body is still in a shutdown mode and I have no energy. Even when I do something small, it drains me completely.”
Regulating yourself out of a freeze (and fawn) response actually requires more activation and arousal not less, because they are already low arousal states - which is why all you want to do is sleep.
When I’m feeling like this, I find that music can be such a gentle but powerful way to create enough of an upwards shift in energy, to get me to take a bigger next step that’s more energising, like signing up for a workout class.
These are three of my favourite at the moment:
